Wolf responsibility

| December 29, 2005 10:00 PM

This week's news is that the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, out of the goodness of their hearts, (a) is now allowing Idaho to take over most responsibility for the wolves, and (b) hopes to do the same with Montana.

Of course, moving the wolves to Montana was a U.S. project, and U.S. keeps control — the states will still have to ask Uncle Sam for permission if the states' research show that the wolves are killing off too many elk or deer, but the states have the privilege of spending money to do that research, and spending money to handle all of the wolf problems now so generously given to Idaho and soon to be given to Montana,

The recent news release conspicuously avoids any mention of any federal money to pay Idaho (or Montana) for the expense of assisting Uncle Sam with Uncle Sam's problems with the wolves.

Uncle Sam brought these wolves to us, and why do we take their problems off their hands, and spend money on the problems as well?
