Ice cream social

Celebrate summer with an old-fashioned Ice Cream Social and hymn sing, to take place in the Historic Whitefish First Presbyterian Church, Monday evening, Aug. 29th at 7 p.m. Ice cream with toppings will be served in the Fellowship Hall following. Safe driving

All area residents, 55 and older, are invited to attend the AARP Driver Safety Program, also known as 55 Alive, in Columbia Falls. Sessions will be at the North Valley Senior Center, Tuesday, Sept. 6, and Thursday, Sept. 8. Sessions are from 12:30 until 4:30 p.m. both days. Insurance discounts are available for folks who take the class. Cost is $10 per person. Register at the Senior Center, 205 Nucleus, with Roxy Larsen, manager, or by telephoning 892-4087 for details.

Scrimmages

The annual Columbia Falls Booster Club blue and white scrimmages to kick off the fall sports season are Aug. 25. The barbecue starts at 5:30 to 7 p.m., with $3 for a cheeseburger and $2 for a hot dog. Cost includes chips and a drink and dessert. At 7:15 p.m. the teams will be announced and at 7:30 p.m. is the football scrimmage.

School sign up

Glacier Christian School will have fall sign ups from day care through sixth grade, including pre-school. Please call the school for more information.

School starts

School starts Wednesday, Aug. 31 for students. Then Monday, Sept. 5 is the Labor Day holiday and school resumes Sept. 6. Frosh orientation is 6 to 9 p.m. at the high school Aug. 29. Principals and secretaries are in the offices now and can be contacted if there are any questions.

Driver's ed

Driver's education starts soon. Sign up at the high school before Sept. 2. Cost is $190. Call the school at 892-6500.

Penguin movie

The Glacier Institute will show the acclaimed documentary "The March of the Penguins" Sept. 9 at 6 p.m. at the O'Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish. The movie starts at 8 p.m. but is previewed with a dessert reception along with beer and wine sales. Advance tickets are $17 for adults and $10 for children. Proceeds benefit the Institute's Big Creek Discovery School programs for children. To order tickets by phone, call 755-1211.

Honor list

Jacob Forke of Columbia Falls was named to the spring honor's list at Concordia University. He is majoring in biology.

Field trip

Flathead National Forest Hosts Field Trip for Forest Plan Revision. The Flathead National Forest is hosting a field trip on Aug. 31, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., to discuss forest plan revision. Bus transportation will be provided. If interested in participating, please contact Denise Germann at 758-5252. The forest plan is a strategic plan for managing the Flathead National Forest for the next 20 years and provides a framework for site-specific projects.
