Tennis splits against Polson

It was a good tennis meet for the Columbia Falls girls Tuesday, but not so great for the boys.

The girls won 5-2, but the boys lost 6-1.

Kate Marcille lost to Jenn Orchard, 1-6, 4-6, Emily Emmert defeated Elise Bennett, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4, Sara Marcille beat Maitea York, 6-3, 6-3, and Lisa Carter beat Addie Kranty, 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles, Nikki Freebury and Crystal Nieves beat Emily Fors and Malika Erickson, 4-6, 6-4, 7-5.

Donna Burns and Danielle Fagre lost to Jerika Ward and Sarah Porkazzo, 6-4, 3-6, 3-6.

Chelsea Smith and Jessica Hopkins beat Marli Harmon and Anjili Campbell, 6-3, 6-7 (3-7), 6-3.

"It was great to win, but we played like we'd practiced in a gym all spring," said coach Jerry Smalley. "We were tentative and didn't show the confidence expected halfway through the season."

In boys action, Frederich VonSchweinitz lost to Brian Dubuque, 5-7, 1-6, Clayton Johnson lost to Spencer Irwin, 3-6, 0-6, and Jeremy Loween beat Jake Greberz, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.

In doubles, Devon Hagen and Chuck Sneddon lost to Logan Klein and Zach Brown, 0-6, 0-6, Kevin Kropp and Michael Karper lost to Mitchell Grove and Derrick Roberts, 0-6, 1-6, and Casey Hebert and Paul Webb lost to Sean Holley and Gale Gay, 2-6, 0-6.

"Polson's boys are very good," Smalley said. "The scores don't reflect how much our boys have improved since last season."
