State land vigilance needed

The planning process for the 13,000 acres of state school trust land surrounding Whitefish is building to a crescendo, and the Advisory Group entrusted with developing a neighborhood plan for these precious areas faces some of the toughest issues in the weeks to come.

Ironically, this final push comes at a time when the public is preoccupied with the glory of a Flathead summer. Many are recreating on the very lands whose future is being penciled out to meet the state mandate of producing more revenue for schools. Yet it behooves us to remain vigilant in this planning process. Advisory Group chairman Alan Elm said "community buy-in" to this plan is essential.

Public meetings will be held every Thursday, from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Whitefish Credit Union board room, starting Aug. 5. Let your voice be heard.
