After dropping two matches against a tough lineup on the first day of the Mining City Duals in Butte, the Wildcats feasted on weaker competition in the consolation bracket Saturday.

On Friday in Butte, Columbia Falls crushed Helena Capital 52-33, but lost to Billings Senior 37-33 and Conrad 54-31.

Saturday in the consolation matches, the Wildcats squeaked by Helena 41-39 and then dominated Livingston, winning 72-12.

"We came back and ended up having a good weekend," coach Wes Knutson said. "We were hoping to make it to the championship pool. We were in a pretty tough pool."

Havre took the championship with a 46-29 win against Billings Skyview in the final match. Flathead finished third.

Senior Aric Tarr was the only wrestler to win all five of his matches for Columbia Falls. Tarr, wrestling in the 119 weight division, is 6-0 after losing his first match since his freshman year on Dec. 4.

"He came back and wrestled extremely hard," Knutson said. "And he is in a tough weight class."

The Wildcats also whipped Ronan 61-16 on Thursday. The Wildcats had pins by Cody Kolodejchuk, 112, Dalvin Averill, 135, Bobby Opp, 140, Ryan Buck, 145, Calvin Williams, 160, and Tommy Church, 275.

Michael Hader, Averill, Nik Caron and Church all went 5-1 for Columbia Falls last week.

Knutson was also impressed by Kolodejchuk, a freshman who went 4-0 at 112. Cory Pete, who went 2-0, made weight and replaced him on Saturday.

Knutson said Pete looked "tough as nails," and it was good to have the former state placer back in the lineup.

Knutson expects Kolodejchuk to move down to 105.

"That will really solidify our lineup," Knutson said. "Makes it a lot tougher, and we'll have all the weights filled in, too."

Columbia Falls has two matches with Libby coming up. Tonight (Thursday), they wrestle Libby at 7:30 p.m. in Libby. Then at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday they wrestle Libby at home.

"They're a darn tough team this year," Knutson said. "It should be a barn-burnin' dual."

Columbia Falls also competes in the Buzz Lucey Tourney Saturday in Eureka.
