The annual Two Medicine Voices Speaker Series hosted by Glacier-Two Medicine Alliance continues Wednesday, June 11, with a special talk hosted in Whitefish by Bruce McLellan, wildlife research ecologist and author of "Grizzly Bear Science and the Art of a Wilderness Life: Forty Years of Research in the Flathead Valley.”

The event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at the Whitefish Community Center at 121 E Second St. and is free and open to the public

In his retirement, McLellan wrote “Grizzly Bear Science and the Art of a Wilderness Life” to summarize his 45-year study of grizzly bears in the Flathead Valley. At the event, McLellan will discuss some bear ecology from his book and leave time for questions and discussion.

McLellan is a retired wildlife research ecologist who, since 1978, has done radio telemetry and DNA based field research on grizzly bears and caribou in several locations in British Columbia. He wrote dozens of science journal papers on these species. Over the decades he has been involved with many land-use, access management and recreation management processes. He helped initiate the Bear Awareness Society in the 1990s, which has since evolved into Wildsafe BC.  He was president of the International Association for Bear Research and Management and co-chaired the IUCN Bear Specialist Group for 15 years. He is now the Redlist Authority for this group.

The Two Medicine Voices Speaker Series will continue until August, with storytellers and authors focusing on the theme “Stories of the Wild.” The other talks in this series will take place in East Glacier Park, Montana.
