‘Rooted in Reading’ library program encourages early reading

| January 22, 2025 1:00 AM

Starting in January 2025, the Whitefish Community Library is encouraging families of young children to participate in the 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program.

The reading challenge program aims to foster a love for reading while laying a strong foundation for lifelong learning. The concept is simple, read to newborns, infants or toddlers. The goal is to have 1,000 books read to them before they start kindergarten.

Reading one book a night, every day, means 365 books have been read. That is 730 books in two years and 1,095 books in three years.

As Dr. Seuss once said, “You’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.”

The library’s 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten has a tree theme and the slogan, “Watching us grow as readers!”

The library plans to create a beautiful banner, designed by Madysen Lewis Design and Communications, of a tree that will soon be embellished with milestone leaves as young patrons make their way through the challenge.

Those interested can stop by the library to pick up packets today. A library card is not necessary to participate in the free program. The library will provide all the resources needed to participate.
