Financial arrangements for the construction of the $1,500,000 North Valley Hospital addition were completed at the Northwestern Bank in Great Falls. Officials of the City of Whitefish and the North Valley Hospital. Hospital administrator Burrell Hatfield said that the 50-bed progressive care addition was over 30% complete. Twenty-five of the beds were for patients needing extended care after hospital care and 25 beds were for intermediate nursing home type care.

He may have been dressed like Santa Claus, but it was actually Councilman John Garrity who was given a ticket for parking next to a yellow curb in Whitefish two days before Christmas. Garrity argued strongly to the rest of the council that the city's ordinance, which outlaws parking next to yellow curbs, be suspended in winter months when snowfall covers them. Garrity said he and the other 12 people who had been ticketed that day shouldn't have to dig for the curbs. He said that watching the meter maid “paw like a horse to find the curb,” reminded him of being back on the farm

Though the throngs of revelers crowded bars and restaurants in Whitefish New Years and the night was relatively quiet, according to Whitefish police, who made only two arrests and one for drunk driving and another for domestic abuse. The fights were reported at downtown bars, but both were resolved by the time the police arrived.

A bit of soda man who ventured out of bounds on Big Mountain was rescued after an 11-hour search. Twenty-two-year-old Jeff Sturgeon of Fergus Falls, Minnesota, became separated from three friends shortly after noon while intentionally skewing out of bounds on the north side of Big Mountain. Big Mountain spokesperson Brian Schott emphasized the increased risk involved with going past the ropes and that “the buddy system is critical,” urging the importance of staying within sight and hearing distance of at least one other person while skiing out of bounds.

A potent winter storm hit the Flathead Valley and closed schools, buried cars in snow and had many longtime locals reminiscing about the “good old days” of winter in Whitefish. Storm totals were impressive, with Whitefish generally picking up 22 inches. Some areas near Columbia Falls reported nearly 35 inches. All of Flathead County Schools were cancelled Monday and Tuesday due to the heavy snow, extending Christmas break for two more days. It was the first time in six years Whitefish called off classes for snow
