| October 30, 2024 12:00 AM

Steven T. Smith, 76, died peacefully at home on Oct. 17, 2024, attended by his wife, Martha, of 54 years. He graduated from Lycoming College, Williamsport, Pennsylvania, with a degree in technical theater.

He moved from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to the Flathead in 2003. He owned Gresko's Bakery and Deli in Kalispell for eight years and sold baked goods and hand-squeezed lemonade at a booth in the Whitefish Farmers' Market each summer season for 15 years.

Using Philadelphia as a base, for nearly 40 years, he traveled widely both domestically and internationally as a television news photographer. In addition, he authored two books and numerous magazine articles about World War II, specializing in Pacific submarine warfare. A little-known fact is that he played himself as a news photographer in the movie "Broadcast News."

He is survived by his wife; son Geoffrey; and sister Chris.

Services will be held privately. Donations in his honor can be made to Montana Public Radio, and to the Bad Rock Volunteer Fire and Quick Response Unit.
