Nearly perfect conditions were expected when the Big Mountain officially opened Friday. Chairs 1, 3, 5 and the platter lift would be operating when the resort fired up for the 1984-85 season. Whitefish City Council was unable to act when three council members failed to attend the meeting. Action on the city sidewalk ordinance and appointments to the city park commission and government review commission had to be held over to the next council meeting. Discussion of the speed limit over the new viaduct and a committee for a city business park were also postponed. Councilors Vic Workman, Craig Scott and Coco Bee did not show up for the meeting. The City Council cannot act without a quorum, or a majority of the council, according to city ordinances.

An explosion behind the Christian Life Center on US 93 S hospitalized two people and destroyed their camper. One female victim was taken to Kalispell Regional Medical Center and was expected to be flown to a burn unit. A male victim was at North Valley Hospital in good condition. According to Whitefish Fire Chief Dave Sype, one of the occupants of the camper was trying to light a stove when the explosion occurred. A dog was also injured in the explosion. Police took care of it and planned on delivering it to a veterinarian for treatment of singed fur and a burned nose.

A non-discrimination resolution was to go before Whitefish City Council. The resolution was in response to a Nov.17 rally organized by Love Lives Here in the Flathead Valley. Citizens asked the City Council to create a no hate ordinance or pass some type of anti-discrimination legislation for the city. City Manager Chuck Stearns told the Pilot it's unlikely the city can consider a no hate law due to First Amendment protections.
