Girls track takes team title, Holmquist breaks Western A meet record

The Whitefish girls track and field team earned back-to-back divisional titles after dominating competition on day two of the Western A Divisional meet in Hamilton.

The two-day meet that the Broncs hosted on Friday and Saturday showcased Class A talent from across western Montana. Several Whitefish girls earned individual titles while many more contributed to the team points.

A highlight on day one was when Bulldog senior Talon Holmquist launched a record-breaking shot put of 56 feet, 10 ½ inches. The throw was significantly further than Holmquist’s previous best (53-8) and set a new Western A Divisional meet record, one that dated back 46 years. Holmquist has consistently set new personal records weekly throughout the season and upped his throws by nearly 7 feet from last year’s divisional.

In team points, the boys came in fourth with 62 points finishing behind Southwest teams Hamilton, Dillon and Frenchtown, respectively.

The Whitefish girls trailed Columbia Falls in the team standings after day one, but the Whitefish athletes' success on Saturday helped to secure the team victory. The Lady Bulldogs scored 123 points for first, Corvallis was second with 96, Dillon third with 86 and Columbia Falls finished fourth holding onto 75 points.

“It was definitely a complete team effort — every girl showed up and competed,” Whitefish girls track coach Kelliann Blackburn said. “We had a lot of personal bests and they were mentally and physically ready.”

Individually for the girls, Whitefish swept the sprints with sophomore Brooke Zetooney nabbing the title in both the 100 meter dash and the 200; teammate Hailey Ells ran to a sub-1 minute time for first in the 400 meters which was a personal record. Ells also was second in the 100 behind Zetooney.

Whitefish senior Erin Wilde cleared 5 feet, 4 inches in the high jump to win the event and won the long jump with a mark of 17-10.5. She also finished fourth in the triple jump.

Bulldog Isabelle Cooke finished second in the 800 meters, narrowly edged by Columbia Falls’ distance leader Siri Erickson.

In the long relay, the Whitefish girls team made up of Rachael Wilmot, Cooke, Maeve Ingelfinger and Zetooney took the divisional title.

Kristina Shestak took fourth in javelin; Maeve Ingelfinger came in third in the 100 hurdles while Ells took third in the 300 hurdles — both in personal record fashion.

“It’s awesome as a coach to watch all the hard work during the regular season come to fruition and to see these girls come out and do their best was awesome,” Blackburn said.

For the boys, in addition to Holmquist’s shot put title, Whitefish senior Gabe Menicke nailed his triple jump to win with a mark of 44-2.25. Menicke in the last two years has become a triple jump leader in Class A and will look to defend his state title at the meet this weekend.

Another Whitefish senior Bodie Smith leaped to a personal best of 21 feet, 4 ¾ inches to win the title in the long jump. Smith also finished third in both the 110 and 300 meter hurdles.

In the 3200, Bulldog sophomore Deneb Linton ran to third place with a time of 9:59.74.

In the long relay, the boys team of Smith, Gabe Lund, Barrett Garcia and Menicke came in second place with a time of 3:29.44.

Up next is the state meet, and that’s when Bulldog coaches get to see it all come together.

“We’re looking forward to ending our season on a high and hopefully we can pull everything together… state is where it matters,” Blackburn said.

The Bulldogs will head to the Class A State Track Meet in Butte on Friday and Saturday. Field events will begin at 9 a.m. and running events at 10:30 a.m. on both days.
