Participants post fast times in annual Big Mountain Run
The 40th Big Mountain Run on Saturday at Whitefish Mountain Resort showcased talent from local runners who finished the Danny On Hill Climb route with impressive times.
The finisher with the overall fastest time was Drew Coco who ran the 3.8 mile uphill race in 34:46 — around 30 seconds faster than his winning time from last year. Coco, who grew up in Whitefish and led the Bulldog track and cross country teams during his high school years, was named King for the 2022 race. Queen of the Big Mountain Run this year is 19-year-old Hannah Perrin out of Kalispell. Perrin ran for the Flathead Bravettes and now is in the MSU track program.
Whitefish’s Deneb Linton was named Prince after claiming the top time in the Junior category for males and the Princess is 13-year-old Elise Hagen. For the Top Dog category, dogs Jack and Ed Blair claimed the honor.
The run started decades ago with a crew of around 40 runners trying to raise money for the Glacier Nordic Club to buy a van for the competitive youth team to travel to competitions. The race has grown over the years and is still one of the largest fundraising events for the Glacier Nordic youth programs.
Participants run or hike to the top of Big Mountain via the Danny On trail at Whitefish Mountain Resort. It is a distance of 3.8 miles with 2,200 feet of elevation gain. The finish is at the Big Mountain summit.
