Whitefish wrestlers place at Ted Kato tourney

Though slim in numbers this week, Whitefish had three athletes place in the Ted Kato Memorial Tournament in Thompson Falls on Saturday.

Bulldog freshman Landree Aurund was the champion in the 120-pound division, staying undefeated in three matches throughout the tournament.

Aurund had a bye in the opening round, and then in the quarterfinal won by technical fall over Ashlei Hawkins of Sandpoint, Idaho. In the semifinals, he pinned Valier’s Chantz Connelly in 1:42 and in the final won by technical fall over Preist River wrestler Collin Magers.

In the 132-pound weight class, another Whitefish freshman Logan Heyne placed second in the tournament after Fairfield’s Miguel Ramos won by major decision, 15-1, over Heyne in the championship.

Heyne went 3-1 throughout his matches at the Ted Kato tournament, winning all three by pinning his opponents.

Bulldog Carter Moran also competed at the tournament, placing fourth in the 138 weight class. Moran lost in a quarterfinal match, but then won two consolation rounds to earn a spot in the third-place match. Harold Miller of Shelby pinned Moran in 2:58 in the final round, placing Moran in fourth.

Whitefish came in ninth place overall in the team standings out of 16 total teams competing. The Bulldogs finished just ahead of fellow Class A foe Polson. Sandpoint, Idaho won the tournament.

Heyne also competed on Friday at a mixer in Thompson falls, pinning Aaron Sawyer of Cascade, Washington in 1:43.

Whitefish will be back on the mat Thursday in Eureka and then is scheduled to host the Whitefish duals on Friday beginning at 1 p.m. at the Dawg Pound.
