The Whitefish High School speech and debate team kicked off the season competing at an invite in Kalispell on Saturday.

Bulldog coach Sara Mueller says a small number of competitors attended the first invite and the team was excited to get the season rolling.

“Whitefish had a small group of students competing in Kalispell this weekend,” she said. “We were really able to focus on new debaters with little pressure to score group sweepstakes points.”

At the tournament, Whitefish was led by the team of Addie Blackaby and Zoe Tremper who took fifth place in the Public Forum Debate category.

Whitefish is coming off last season winning its first State A title since 2005 after the team handedly beat out rival Columbia Falls.

All the tournaments last year were held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but this year competition returns to in-person.

The Bulldogs will compete again on Saturday in Hamilton and plan to take a larger team as the season gets started.

“We are excited to be expecting back many of our fall sport participants after a very successful fall season within the next few days,” Mueller said.
