The Great Northern Brewery’s use of a search light to attract customers to the black Star Draught House during the Winter Carnival was a violation of the city’s sign ordinance, according to city planners, and so was the large black lettering on the steel building’s north side. The brewery planned to seek a variance for its signs.

March 22, 2001

Winter Sports Inc. and Hines Resorts were combining forces to improve Big Mountain Ski and Summer Resort. The project included $300 million intotal development that would include housing units, hotels, condos and a 20,000-square-foot convention center.

March 21, 1991

Whitefish School Board candidates Keith Armstrong, Christine Ross, Katherine Smead and Rita Vail answered questions during a forum. The candidates were in general agreement about most issues.

March 19, 1981

A lively campaign was being waged from Whitefish protesting the possible loss of Amtrak service due to budget cuts. Norm Kurtz, general manager of the Big Mountain, said he had been contacting Congress and Amtrak officials to let them know the Empire Builder had exceeded expectations for the number of passengers.

50 years ago

March 18, 1971

Money financing the Ski bus ran out. Because of the good skiing conditions the bus would continue to run on a week to week basis with a 50 cents fee being charged for all riders.
