Alpine skiers earn podium spots

Flathead Valley Ski Education Foundation team members enjoyed fresh powder at Big Sky last weekend with the race team securing 15 total spots on the podium.

Two girls races were held on Friday, Jan. 29, two boys races on Saturday, Jan. 30 and one race for each on Sunday, Jan. 31.

The Lone Peak Speed Series event was part of a season-long schedule of events run within the Northern Division of the US Ski & Snowboard Association. The Northern Division includes all of Montana and parts of Wyoming and South Dakota.

Youth skiers ranging in age from 12 to 18 were competing in U14, U16 and U19 classes to qualify races for their respective Northern Division or Western Region Championships in March. The Flathead Valley/Whitefish Mountain Resort race team had a number of great finishes. Shaye Ewing earned three first places finishes, Jackson Surber had two firsts and one second, Christian Lund had one first and one second, Melody McNally had a first and third, Clayton Surber had two third places, William Lewison earned a second place finish, and Tyler Anderson and Colin Harper each had one third place finish.

The Flathead Valley Ski Education Foundation is a nonprofit community-based organization that promotes athletic, academic and personal excellence for Flathead Valley youth through participation on the FVSEF Ski Team.
