The Whitefish track and field team competed in two meets last week and in several events the teams clocked noteworthy times and distances.

First the team competed against Flathead and Bigfork at Legends Stadium in Kalispell in an unscored event. Then on Friday Whitefish traveled to Libby to compete in a smaller triangular event with the Loggers and Eureka Lions.

For the girls in Kalispell, Whitefish freshman Brooke Zetooney ran a personal best of 27.61 seconds in the 200 meter race to edge Flathead for first place.

Hailey Ells was another highlight in the 300 meter hurdles finishing first with a time of 48.39 seconds, also edging a group of Flathead runners.

“Hailey Ells won the 300 hurdles, she’s a freshman,” Whitefish girls head track and field coach Kelliann Blackburn said. “That was an automatic state qualifying time which was pretty awesome. So she qualified for that in the second meet out.”

Other highlights for the Lady Bulldogs from the Kalispell meet included junior Erin Wilde taking first place in the long jump, going a distance of 16 feet and 1/2 inches. Also senior Jenny Patton took second place in both the Javelin and discus events.

“My field event kids keep improving every meet,” Blackburn noted.

Senior Mikenna Ells finished in second place in the 800 meter event. Freshmen Isabelle Cooke and Olivia Genovese went two and three in the 1,600 meter race. Another freshman Bailey Smith took third in the 100 meter hurdles.

In Libby the biggest feat of the day for the girls was Erin Wilde’s high jump, she placed first after jumping 5 feet, 5 inches. This was a personal best for her that also broke the school record from 1973.

“That was pretty exciting, it was a highlight,” Blackburn said. “She jumped 5 feet, 5 inches and it was an old record by a lady named Kim Erickson in 1973. So that’s a big one.”

In the Libby meet, Whitefish finished first in 14 out of the 17 events. Mikenna Ells placed first in the 200 meter event with a state qualifying time, which Blackburn noted was good to have her now qualified in several events.

For the boys in Kalispell, Whitefish junior Colter Gaertner took first place in the 400 meter event with a personal best time of 54.39 seconds; Gaertner also took fourth in the 200 meter event. Senior Marvin Kimera continued his fast pace in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.36 seconds to take third in the event.

Some Bulldog freshmen had a good showing in the distance events with Mason Genovese taking third in the 800 meter, Deneb Linton placing fourth in the 1,600 meter, and Landon Brown taking third in the 3,200 meter event.

Bowdrie Krack took third in both the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdles as well. In the triple jump Barrett Garcia placed second going 37 feet and 10 1/4 inches, Mason Genovese was just behind him in third place on the same event.

In Libby the boys had a good day as well.

Marvin Kimera and Gabe Menicke went one and two in the 200 meter event. Mason Genovese took first in the 1,600 meter race; Deneb Linton placed first with Will Hyatt in second in the 3,200 meter run.

Whitefish junior Talon Holmquist won the shot put competition and took second in discus; placing first in discus was Bulldog Bode Wold.

The Bulldogs absolutely dominated the long jump event, taking the top four spots led by junior Bodie Smith who jumped a season-best of 20 feet.

Whitefish will next compete on April 20 as they host their first home triangular meet. They will compete against Bigfork and Glacier beginning at 3 p.m.
