A City Council work session started to look at options for a new City Hall building, which had been identified as a priority in the 2006 Downtown Master Plan. The city was interested in lots near the depot and library.

Feb. 10, 2000

Whitefish Police kept busy during Winter Carnival, arresting 13 over the course of the weekend. Most of the arrests involved young people and alcohol, leading to drunk driving, back-alley urination and underage drinking.

30 years ago

Feb. 8, 1990

The defunct Remington Bar on Central Avenue was about to get new life. The bar had closed, been sold and was gutted, but had plans to reopen under the same name. A “Gay 90s” theme was planned for the bar.

40 years ago

Feb. 8, 1980

While the world holds its breath on the strain of coronavirus originating from Wuhan, China, 40 years ago Whitefish had its eyes out for “Hong Kong flu.” Higher rates of absenteeism were reported in Whitefish and Kalispell, and several suspected cases of the flu strain had been sent to Helena for testing.

50 years ago

Feb. 12, 1970

Whitefish Middle School was looking to improve its locker rooms after a slew of comments were made, some of which described the rooms as “a dungeon,” “worse than the pictures of the Kalispell jail,” and “a disgrace to Whitefish.” The locker rooms, which were built in 1927, were used by about 300 students.
