The popular Sage Spa and Salon, which had operated on Railroad Street since 2004, closed its doors for good. The store cited adverse economic conditions as their reason for closing.

Jan. 27, 2000

The Whitefish School Board came together for a party, but it wasn’t theirs. The board looked into a “whole mess of possible training rules violations” by WHS athletes known for attending parties where illegal behavior was occuring, sometimes with parents attending. Even shutting activities down for two weeks was proposed as a consequence.

30 years ago

Jan. 25, 1990

As oil prices were taking as much as a 200 percent increase on the eastern half of the United States, Whitefish was holding steady. Home heating oil went up to $1.60 a gallon in some parts of the U.S., compared to Whitefish’s 83 cents per gallon. The Canadian supply of fuel in the Flathead was a contributing factor to the stability here.

40 years ago

Jan. 24, 1980

The Big Mountain Ski Resort was facing its third straight season with a fatality on its slopes after Marshall Mach was killed in an avalanche. Mach, 25, was the owner of the Palace Bar in town. The accident occurred out of bounds on the back side of the mountain.

50 years ago

Jan. 29, 1970

Whitefish’s water supply was the main topic at hand for the City County Planning Board. The board heard reports from local engineers saying a critical situation was developing, and Whitefish would need a new water source for the city. The city’s reservoir provided winter needs and was supplemented by lake water.
