Just as plowing recently started on Glacier’s Going-to-the-Sun Road this spring, bikers were already taking to the road 10 years ago. A spring storm, however, dropped a foot of new snow on the road, sending plows back down the road to clear out areas for the second time in the month.

April 20, 2000

Whitefish had its eye on a new project — a fully enclosed ice rink for the city. The Whitefish Sports Facilities Foundation was looking at two options, either enclosing the existing rink or building a brand new one, with total costs ranging between $1 million and $3 million.

30 years ago

April 19, 1990

While the ski lifts have been closed for a month this season, Big Mountain in 1990 was just hitting the brakes on the season, having secured a record number of skier visits for the season. The resort reported 271,881 skier visits, nearly a 6,500 increase over the previous year. For reference, during this shorter season the resort totaled 385,000 skier visits.

40 years ago

April 24, 1980

The jobs of about 30 nontenured Whitefish teachers were up in the air. The district gave out termination notices for the teachers as a safeguard in case a May levy failed. The district called the notices a formality, though the late date of the levy put a strain on the potential job hunt for teachers if the levy did not pass.

50 years ago

April 23, 1970

Whitefish’s city accounting system was about to be “modernized.” The city hired a new consultant to update the city’s bookkeeping system, at the very low cost of $800.
