Sidewalk closures on Wisconsin dangerous situation

A young boy July 21, riding his bike down Wisconsin Avenue, along with bumper to bumper cars, was forced to veer into traffic because of the Quarry, a new housing development. I watched this with dismay.

Sidewalk closed, the sign says.

I called the city to ask why the construction pushed a young boy into such danger. Craig Workman, public works director, said, the city required a bus turn out. Builders will build the sidewalk behind. Workman wished they would have waited until the busy season is over. Really? Such a lame answer.

Wisconsin Avenue is always (even in slower times) busy, as those of us who travel it daily, know full well. Cars seldom stop for pedestrians or kids on bikes. Workman also said they will place cones. How will that help? The sign says closed. Where are the walkers and bikers supposed to go? The other side of the street has only the shoulder for walkers, runners, and bicyclists.

The only option is going directly into traffic. Great solution? I disagree.

So, if our children are in danger; the city said this situation will be fixed later. The people own the right of way. The danger remains now.

Please call your City Council.
