In response to Joseph Coco Jr.'s letter about "Amtrak Economics," I would like to make some points.
First, every form of transportation that Amtrak competes with is subsidized by our government. The government built and maintains the highway system, while the airlines enjoy direct subsidies and guaranteed loans. This is in no way a free-market competition. Why should only Amtrak have to pay its own way?

The Glacier United U-12 boys and girls teams dominated the Montana State Cup in Kalispell this past weekend, winning their divisions.
The U-12 boys team, coached by Peter Steele and Gary Danczyk, came out of Saturday's games with a 1-1 record — a 6-2 loss to the Missoula Strikers Red team and a solid win against the Helena Arsenal Gold.
After reading the articles in the July 16 edition of the Whitefish Pilot regarding recreational use on Spencer Mountain, I have to come to the following conclusions and observations:
I have nothing against multiple-use on public lands, but the acreage within Spencer Mountain is in danger of being loved to death.
Montanans have gained a national reputation for their steadfast protection of privacy and property rights.
That means it's not likely a city government here will condemn someone's home to make room for a private business, as the U.S. Supreme Court recently allowed.

I write in response to the Eagle's bestowing upon The Milhous Group the weekly congratulatory "Tip of the Hat." In appreciation
To all who have given of their money, time, effort knowledge and skills, a heart-felt thank you from the president of Bigfork Youth Baseball. Over the past three years, we have seen a large increase in the "off-the-field help." For those who show up to the field clean-up day in early spring, help with fund-raisers, participate in the opening day ceremonies, donate use of equipment, prepare the fields before games and clean up after games. Closing day ceremonies this year was a particularly successful event. It was our annual picnic and raffle drawing. Volunteers set up tents, table, chairs and food for 300 plus attendees in an hour and a half. Even more impressive was the tear down in 37 minutes! With this type of help, it allows the managers and coaches time to work directly with the kids and concentrate on teaching them the great game of baseball.
In need
Please help spread the word throughout our community that the Flathead Food Bank is in need of volunteers this summer. Summer is a very difficult time for the Flathead Food Bank's five pantries because donations sharply decrease and volunteers go on vacations or simply want to enjoy the summer with their families. This leads the food banks in quite a bind.
With pride
Thank you VFW Post 4042 for the most inspiring Memorial Day service ever. We watched with pride as your proud VFW members, in dark pants, white crisp shirts and blue vests edged in gold trim, marched up and stood at dedicated attention as guest speakers and officers of the VFW spoke. They reminded us of all the years of service and sacrifice that make Memorial Day so meaningful to all of us.

"So you backpack?" the woman asked. She was eyeing my pack which was in the back of the truck splayed out like a big dead fish.
(I know, I know what you're thinking. Didn't someone steal your last pack from the back of your truck? Didn't you learn anything? The answer of course, is yes, and no. I learned you can leave your pack in the back of the truck, just as long as you sit in the restaurant window, so you can keep an eye on the pack. Of course, if the waitress is good looking, all bets are off.)
