Neighbors near Second Street and the Whitefish Lake State Park were happy to hear about plans for quiet zones for trains passing through Whitefish. The rules would keep BNSF trains from blasting their sirens in the area. The city sent BNSF a collection of letters and petitions from annoyed residents.

Tragedy struck as a Bigfork teenager died while tubing down Big Mountain with her friends late on a Friday night. The incident was the fifth fatality on the mountain in 20 years.

The Whitefish City Council was preparing to endorse a resort tax in the following year’s legislative session. The city proposed a 3 percent tax on sales in restaurants and bars and other tourism expenses. Opponents of the proposal worried about losing business to neighboring towns that don’t have the tax.

A report by the North Valley Hospital showed a 22 percent drop in patient days over the past five years. The drop coincided with a 20 percent population increase in the area during the same time period, and was best explained by more outpatient services and new extended care facilities.

It was an exciting time to be on Big Mountain, as the resort’s 21st season brought two new lifts and the new Ptarmigan Room lounge. The new T-bar and double chair lift increased skier capacity to 3,000 skiers per hour.
