Whitefish residents were dealing with strong smells coming from the city’s sewer treatment plant. A delay in construction kept the sewage lagoons from refilling fast enough, which exposed sludge to the atmosphere and, in turn, the neighbors’ nostrils.

20 years ago

Sept. 17, 1998

A black bear was shot after breaking and entering a Whitefish home off Big Mountain. Investigators believed bacon grease and ripe bananas were the bear’s targets.

30 years ago

Sept. 21, 1988

After a three-year slump, the Whitefish real estate market was booming. The market was seeing a 25-33 percent boost over the previous summer. “The yuppies are buying homes,” one RE/MAX agent noted.

40 years ago

Sept. 21, 1978

As part of a tour of the Pacific Northwest, Consul General Kenichi Yanagi of the Japanese Consulate in Seattle took a goodwill visit to Whitefish. Yanagi visited local timer mills and met with a Japanese exchange student at Whitefish High School.

50 years ago

Sept. 19, 1968

Whitefish’s brand new elementary school had just finished construction and was nearly through its first month of classes. A dedication ceremony was slated for the following month, with speaker Dr. Lawrence Kavich, assistant dean of education at Montana State University.
